The Irish: Putting the O' in Barack Obama

The whole world loves Barack Obama, and when he was elected, thousands, if not millions of Kenyans, Hawaiians, Malaysians and Illinoians laid claim to the most international US president of all time.

It was only a matter of time before Ireland, a country with more people claiming to be descendants than any other, found a link with this multi-racial president, and of course his name sounds very Irish, Barry O'Bama!

Inspired by Barack's great, great, great grandfather coming from Moneygall, an Irish novelty band called the Corrigan Brothers have written a song about him, which, unbelievably, they have been asked to perform at the Presidantial Inauguration Parade in Washington on the 20th January 2009.

Here's the song, followed by an interview with the band. I warn you, the singer might be a bit tuneless, but it's as catchy as hell.

I am the rector of Moneygall and holder of the records which link Obama to Ireland and will be travelling over to Washington with the band

Hi there Stephen,
What an honour to have your comment, the man who unconvered the Irish ancestry of Barack Obama!

It's much more exciting Barack Obama having Irish roots, than Bill Clinton. (I remember when he visited Ballybunion, and the poor owner of the hairdresser's had to have her sign taken down because it was called Monica's!)

I'm delighted to hear you'll be atteneding the inaugeration party yourself. I hope you have a great time, and I look forward to reading your blogs on the subject. History in the making!

Thanks for taking the time to comment and tell the lads the song's a blast!

I love Obama even more, now I know he's a bit Irish!

All the best,
Elizabeth
